Panels

JADE’s interface is built around panels — configurable sections of the screen that display different types of information simultaneously. Understanding panels helps you work faster.

What are panels?

When you open a case or piece of legislation in JADE, you’ll see the main content in the centre of the screen. Around it, panels provide additional context: cited cases, section citations, search results, your JADEmarks, and more. You can open, close, and rearrange panels to suit your workflow.

Key panels for case law research

  • Cases Cited — shows the authorities relied on in the current case
  • Cited By — shows later decisions that have cited the current case
  • Parallel Citations — shows the same case reported in different law report series
  • CaseTrace — the citator panel showing citation analysis at a glance
  • Table of Contents — jump to specific sections of long judgments

Key panels for legislation research

  • Section Citations — every case that has judicially considered the current provision (Professional)
  • Version History — see all historical versions of the provision
  • Legislation Comparison — compare two versions side by side (Professional)

Customising your layout

Click “Panels” in the top navigation bar on jade.io to see the full list of available panels and toggle them on or off. JADE remembers your preferences, so you only need to configure your layout once.

For most practitioners, the default panel layout works well. If you find yourself repeatedly opening the same panels, consider adjusting your defaults to save time.
