Announcing the OpenLaw UTS Pathways Conference

The UTS Faculty of Law and the BarNet Open Law team are proud to host the Pathways to Justice for Survivors of Institutional Child Abuse Conference.

On 19 and 20 September 2025. In Sydney.

Why it is important: Institutional abuse law is a complex area of expertise, and the legal landscape is continually evolving. This Conference brings together a wide range of experts to examine current issues and challenges.

Hear from leaders in the field including from survivor advocates, support services, leaders of commissions of inquiry, the judiciary, specialist institutional abuse law practitioners and expert academics.

The program explores law reform, doctrinal uncertainties, updates in legal practice, redress, mediation and restorative justice, and the unique challenges in providing trauma-informed legal and support services, and emerging evidence and trends in child abuse.

This is a milestone conference: it marks 10 years since the publication of the Redress and Civil Litigation Report by the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in 2015. It also considers subsequent state and international inquiries in New Zealand and England and Wales and features reflections from commissioners of these inquiries on the inquiries and recommendations for reform.

Connect with others at the Reception: on Friday evening after Day 1 where you can speak with the experts over drinks and canapes and meet others in this specialised and growing field of legal practice.
